Robotic Surgery

What is da Vinci Robotic Surgery?

da Vinci is a sophisticated surgical system using a robotic platform to help extend a surgeon’s capabilities. Robotics offer state-of-the-art minimally invasive options for complex diseases and can help treat conditions in gynecologic, urologic, thoracic, cardiac, colorectal, and general surgeries.

Kansas Surgical Consultants proudly offers robotic surgery through Wesley Medical Center, the first and only hospital in south-central Kansas and second hospital in the state to offer the most advanced da Vinci Surgical System, da Vinci Xi. Wesley has performed more than 5,000 da Vinci surgeries and currently has two Si and two Xi da Vinci systems, providing a wide range of robotic surgery options. Kansas Surgical Consultants also offers robotic surgery through Ascension Via Christi Hospitals.

Advantages of da Vinci Robotics

Quicker Recovery – Using three-dimensional imagery and superior high-definition with robotic-assisted tools can reduce complication rates and surgical time. Studies have shown patients have a shorter length of stay and less pain, resulting in a much faster recovery.

da Vinci helps the surgeons at Kansas Surgical Consultants to perform some surgeries laparoscopically that otherwise would need a more invasive approach such as opening the abdomen. Laparoscopy is performed by inserting small instruments with cameras through small openings in the body. Smaller incisions mean fewer wound complications and less postoperative pain for our patients.

What to Expect for Robotic Surgery

da Vinci uses four robotic arms that are placed at a patient’s bedside. These arms are attached to surgical instruments inserted through incisions that are less than an inch long. A lighted, miniature camera is also used to perform the da Vinci surgery.

The surgeon will be in the room with the patient a few feet away viewing high-definition imaging captured by the miniature camera. These three-dimensional images can be viewed at seven times the actual size, which creates far more visibility than conventional laparoscopy images.

Your doctor will be in control of the robotic arms at all times as the robotic arms and instruments can never move by themselves. The robotic instruments used have a jointed-wrist design that has more range of motion than the human hand and has a “tremor filtration system” that refines a surgeon’s hand movements. This advanced precision results in advanced recovery time.
